You are bringing back a few memories. My strongest of that time was during the 1987 market crash. Because Wall St. went first, the following morning everyone knew it was going to be a bloodbath on the ASX (it turned out to the biggest bloodbath since the great depression) so that morning I went to the old National Mutual building on Collins St. (the one that could make a serious claim to being the ugliest building ever built) where the ASX was housed to watch the open and the first hour of trading.

That was back in the days when you had to buy in even lots of shares and the ASX was run on dozens of blackboards and had a viewing area. Boy were the chalkies scrambling that day! I also remember that to get stock prices you had to ring up a number that had pre-recorded prices that ran on a loop and was updated every five minutes.

You also brought back memories of sitting with my father at lunch time (a great investor who was a teacher and began with nothing, and whose great claim to fame was holding BHP when they struck oil in Bass Strait) and listening to 774 read out the stock prices. He died more than ten years ago, and I still manage his legacy, the portfolio that he built on behalf of my mother and his many children and grandchildren. That legacy was used to financially educate his grandchildren by giving each shares upon their birth and contributing to their formal education. It also has assisted his grandchildren into homes of their own. I guess that is the power of learning from others and being willing to change to become the best investor that one can.
