The Middle East is a pretty complex place - its one of those places where even if you have lived there for a long time you never fully understand it. We get a very "filtered" version of the Middle East news here - a lot depends on which way the Australian news source is bent, so it is worth taking a read of a decent English language news website from somewhere over there. I don't know offhand of any good English language newspapers or news websites for Oman, but it is worth taking a read of Al-Ahram - they have reasonable coverage of the region that is fairly well balanced - you just need to let the front page fully load first before trying to read it - https://english.ahram.org.eg/Index.aspx
