I can believe that. I recall from my carpentry days that the half life of houses today is not very long.
Actually here's a little anecdote for you...my dad's very wealthy friend built a house in Toorak(the most expensive suburb in Melbourne) only to tear it down 10 years later to build something better. that's people with money though and not really reflective of the age or structural integrity of the home...
