There are many many advisors who run with the party line of a balanced portfolio and not being overweight in any particular asset class or stock. This is 100% fine for individuals that don’t have a strong interest in monitoring their own finances or portfolios. If you have that interest and like doing research then you can have a lot higher risk portfolio which is probably 100% in the sharemarket. If you are lucky you will end up with one or two winners over your investing life that will be game changers and life changing. They don’t always keep going up. My first life changing share went up 3000%, from 2c to over $6.00. I owned 3m of them, but didn’t hold them all the way through and only sold a few at the top, but I did make enough to set my investing career up. I learnt that if you understand a share enough then you are doing yourself a huge disservice by selling out to “balance” your portfolio and that if you look at most wealthy investors they have a big position in one particular share. You can do this if you know that share backwards. It’s still not without its risks but you won’t get fabulously wealthy if you don’t take risks…. you will just be one of the millions of investors out there with average savings and average returns.
As someone said to me one of the keys to successful investing is “buy low, buy lots”. It seems very trite however it’s true. Remember also that you need to think what happens if this particular investment fails… where does that leave you? So, no borrowing money to invest at the dodgy end of the market.
So imo Neuren is one of those rare companies that will (probably already has been) be life changing for many investors (and of course the drug recipients). I’m going to keep holding until the seemingly inevitable takeover delivers the best possible price for our investment.
