While Iacking visual or other evidence as to how many flat wagons were devoid of containers, this week's three Melbourne AZJ intermodal train departures for Perth (Tuesday, Thursday and today - Saturday) respectively had 88, 74 and 80 wagons.
On the face of it, quite good.
I assume in the first year (despite the 11 year contract with Team Global Express), transcontinental Melbourne/Sydney-Perth and especially the north-south Melbourne-Brisbane trains won't be profitable, or at best they'll only have a small ROIC.
The key will be AZJ gradually growing the number of containers carried due to economic growth (anaemic at present), population growth (Perth doing well, and despite rhetoric, Labor governments hate clamping down on immigration) and some substitution of rail for road/coastal shipping.
