    Yes it was but it wasn't celebrated as a Public Holiday until 1994
    Same name and same date but with different values

    It was 26th January 1949 the day the Naturalization and Citizenship Act 1948 became effective and we all became Australians and not British subjects
    This is why we have a public holiday on this day and hold Citzenship ceremonies in most councils (or used to anyway)
