Scale AI is very likely no longer valued anywhere near $7b. That was back in 2021 (when Appen was also worth billions). Since then, Scale has had difficulties as well (layoffs, client losses) and they had what was seemingly a down round this last summer. I wouldn't use Scale AI as an example of a business model that is working. The industry has been hit hard and everyone is struggling -- and Appen more than most. There are some companies that are recovering though. I know the company that I believe won the Google work that Appen lost, and others are getting sizable GenAI work.
