Interesting.. I'm just having a look on the EPA website out of horrific boredom, and one of the most recent updates posted by those useless buffoons was the publishing of proponent's response to submissions for a Limestone quarry in Binningup, which was published by the EPA just last week.
Now, obviously a limestone quarry is a bit different to a silica sand "mine", and obviously this proposal appears to sit on residential land in a little community right on the coast. Further, it appears that the proponent has a bit of a history of flouting the laws/rules when it comes to the EPA, so I'm not sure too many direct comparisons can really be drawn, BUT;
Their ERD was published on 31/10/22.
It looks as though they received some 200+ odd comments from the public (likely from the disgruntled residents of Binningup, I'd imagine), so I'm sure the whole back and forth between themselves and the EPA might've taken a fair bit longer than we'd expect for the 6 or so comments VRX received for AN.
Their response to public submissions appears to have been lodged on 25/04/23. (164 days after the public review period closed).
Their response to public submissions was accepted/published by the EPA on 25/01/24. (9 months after submission).
VRX's dates, for comparison;
ERD published: 19/06/23
Public comments received: 6
Response to public submissions lodged: 31/10/23 (107 days after the public review period closed).
Response to public submissions accepted/published by the EPA: ??? (imminent?)
If the EPA takes 9 months to accept the proponent's response to public comments for a quarry next-door to a town/tourist destination on the beach with literally HUNDREDS of comments received from the public, how long should they reasonably be expected to take to accept the response to a little sand-digging operation in the middle of no-where on crown land, with SIX comments received from the public?
Let's do the math....
6/200 = 0.03
0.03 x 9 months = 0.27 months = 8.2 days.
=> The EPA should've published the response to submissions on the 8th of November, last year.
tl;dr - they're a lazy bunch of useless twits who need to pull their finger out.
