Preclinical studies are not only cheap (compared to clinical studies), but they are very valuable to optimise the clinical studies. We have with bisantrene a drug that can potentially be used with any cancer, but like every anti-cancer drug ever created it will work better with some cancers than others. We can work this out in the clinic at huge expense, or we can do some cheap experiments in the lab.

The other aspect of preclinical studies is they are a standard part of the data package any pharma partner looks at. You can’t have a credible conversation with any sophisticated partner if your answer to all their questions is “we don’t know why” or “we don’t know how”.
