As having being involved with IT for decades I have seen this happen many times,

Day before deadline:
Are you finished yet?
Almost - 99% done. Should be ok in a week.

Week 1 after deadline: where are you at now?
Going well, 99.9% done, just adding the finishing touches. Check back next week.

Week 2 after deadline:
Can we deliver it now?
No, not quite. Found a silly issue - just about resolved. It's 99.99% done - it's almost perfect.
And so on.

But, one day it will be finished - just don't know when.
