Cornelia Rau was never deported. She was a long term Australian resident but had never taken out Australian citizenship. She was originallt detained by the Qld police and immigration authorities and ended upo in SA. She pretended to be a German tourist. She was awarded over $2m by the incoming Rudd government. The money is held in trust.
She was not reported missing by her family for some 3 months after she went missing - she had a history of leaving then without telling them where she was going.
She has been ill for some time, before she was detained. She got lucky in some respects but she's stll unwell - it was hard for authorities to be mind readers.
