I don't remember any big commercial jets falling out the sky in Oz do you, i don't think Qantas has ever crashed so i'm not sure where you get an exponanential increase in flight deaths from and are you running the number of deaths pro rata to the increase in the number of flights? Flying is still by far the safest form of transport i think but i will say the number of actual flights have grown exponantially since the de-regulation Howard did because after he did it low income earners could afford to catch a plane for a change instead of just the richer end of town and i don't think he cut back on safety as there are civil aviations safety standards and this has nothing to do with the de-regulation and the allowing of competition in our market which was the reason for the price drops in airfares.

The kid had done his 25 hrs of training as required and signed off on by instructors. The reasons for the crash are still unsure and are being investigated as it should be, the rest of the flying school's air fleet has been grounded, i would say theres a much better chance of it being some sort of failure with the plane rather than the 16 yr olds ability, however we'll have to wait for the report so we don't jump to silly conclusions.

I reasonably sure pilots have always been allowed to start from 15yrs, i don't think that was anything Howard changed unless you can provide me with a link showing he reduced the age or something.
