I think it's still a huge beat up with the head of this dept (DERM) getting his backside kicked by the powers to be, after the scare mongering practice by the farmers, locals and freinds of the earth etc...and now they are going over board trying to be seen as doing their job (Desperately trying to justify their existance I say, with some scared they might be stood down). If they did their job properly in the first place I believe none of this would even got to this stage. I say where are they in relation to the vast amounts of other environmental pollutants using benzene etc... that are causing potential health issues daily for most Australians? (Used in so many areas such as Petrol,widely-produced derivatives include styrene, which is used to make polymers and plastics, phenol for resins and adhesives (via cumene), and cyclohexane, which is used in the manufacture of Nylon. Smaller amounts of benzene are used to make some types of rubbers, lubricants, dyes, detergents, drugs, explosives, napalm and pesticides, burning candles in your own home produce benzene and so on etc...etc...) Certainly many other huge contibutors to this when you delve into other pollutants but don't see to many shut down, especially when comparing the figures that were being quoted in relation to Cougar, which from what Cougar has released these figures have been unsubstanitated or incorrect figures with certainly no real need for concern unlike the beat up that seems to have spread like a cancer.
As said before we'll have to wait even longer to see where this goes but lets hope all of this is sorted sooner than later.
I'm absolutely disgusted the way this has been handled by this Qld Government, if they had their act together in the first place none of this would have happened. (Maybe that is exactly what they are, "Actors"!
