Be careful with your trip to the EU to avoid conscription. Some countries in the EU already maintain national service and conscription, and they could always open that up to permanent residence if things got bad enough. There is a good chance the war will be fought in the EU, so not a great place to be. The best way to avoid those things is to get a required trade.
My grandfather was a welder during the conscriptions for Vietnam; he tried to enlist before his number was even called, and they would not send him. The most they would let him do was join the reserves. If your son can make himself valuable to the government they wont send him anywhere. A lot of trades, IT jobs Healthcare and even manufacturing jobs are safe.
