I still clearly remember my first "Investor roadshow".
It was in 2016 and I was working between jobs as an Uber driver.
It was early morning when the ping came through for a pick up in South Perth. It was there that a somewhat sleepy looking guy was waiting on the curbside for me. He got in my car and we headed to his destination, the Avenue, in Nedlands. On the way we engaged in small talk. He told me he was an Engineer who was working at UWA. At first I thought nothing more of it, I was used to picking up people from all walks, but as the journey progressed he elaborated further.
My jaw began to drop and I found it difficult to concentrate on my driving. Was I hearing him correctly ? He was saying that he and his team were working on a process that split Methane into Hydrogen and Carbon directly, using a Iron Ore as a catalyst. Not only that, but the Iron Ore didn't even have to be high quality, " you can shovel off the side of a road in the Pilbarra" he scoffed. He went on to explain how hydrogen was already a $150 billion global market, but that 95% of this was currently produced by SMR which produced 10 tons of CO2 for every ton of hydrogen, whereas this "Hazer" process circumvented that pollution and was going to be a truly disruptive technology.
Before I knew it we reached his destination and we parted ways, but I still have his business card and the clear memory of that conversion.
