one slight issue, the Index fund and the shorter can't be the same entity as otherwise the Index fund is failing it's reason to exist, i.e. to track STX, it's position would be neutral if equally long and short. The Index Fund is quite comfortable buying the shorter's stock, but has the shorter got much bang for their buck? The shorter still holds the exposure to the STX SP, it would still have to favour being short STX on fundamentals, and hope it wins the bet. JMO.
