Well, i'm not sure a 50% reduction in the cost of a battery will put most EV's into the realm of "much more affordable" for the average person.
The powertrain (battery, motor, etc) in an EV is estimated to be about 51% of the cost of the vehicle. The rest is 10% to the interior, 16% to the body exterior, 14% to the controlling electronics and 9% to the chasis.
So lets say we apportion 30% to the battery and 21% to the motor and associated bits. That would mean In an averaged price EV of around $80k, we could assume the full battery component to be around $24k. At half price it would be $12k.
Even if the buyer got the full amount of the saving (which is pretty unlikely) you are still up for around $68k ... which is a saving, but it don't expect it would start a buying stampede.
