Except DM didn't sell most of his shares.
If Ting exercises years early - he is a US citizen - you pay capital gains on shares when you exercise them. The gain is calculated as the difference between the strike price and the price of the share at the time of exercising. So if you are at what you assess is the bottom, with lots of good news to come that will drive the SP up - you exercise your options and minimise your tax obligation.
