Being in a position to be able to free carry shares through the exercise of options and disposal of the heads to cover the exercise, is a privilege earned through years of work and uncertainty. 2 years ago things were looking awful. The recent positive results from PL4 didn't materialise out of thin air - that is the culmination of years of (often unpaid) study, late nights hunched over a microscope or oscilloscope in a laboratory, meetings with potential development partners, passing on significant offers to work elsewhere, instead pursuing relevant study, creeping uncertainty that it's even going to work. The results of this development could be stellar and the company could STILL not find a buyer - it's not just a matter of capability it's a matter of timing.
If they want to cover themselves to the downside, that's just prudent and a reward for their sweat equity. PL3 could happen again. A buyer could fail to materialise.
