Russia said that it would use Nukes (I presume Tactical Nukes) if Russian territories were attacked.
Initially the US/NATO limited the range of munitions/drones supplied to the Ukraine so that the Ukraine could not attack Russian mainland.
That policy has seemed to be dropped so it will be interesting to see what Russia's response will be . IMO this is why Russia has transferred some tactical Nukes to Belarus so that it can have launching points close to Kiev.
Over the last few days there has been a furore in Washington about prospective Russian Nukes in space capable of wiping out US war surveillance satellites
I guess this puts the doomsday clock even closer to midnight. So the answer is to call a truce and commence negotiations before imperilling the world over whether the Ukraine ought to be neutral or join NATO.
There is no way of unscrambling this egg now so compromise is the logical answer resulting in a Ukrainian rump state which will need ongoing European economic support for generations.
The option is dicing with a Nuke War.
Just imagine if the US and say Mexico were at war about Mexico joining China's SCO and China was supplying the Mexicans with long range drones which are being used to attack Texas, how would the US react?
IMO if conventional bombing didn't do the trick, they would use tactical Nukes. Great powers are great powers because ultimately they have the ability to use Nukes
