Boondog, you completely miss their logic, it can't be destroyed by burning,is safer than a bank in some countries, is readily transportable in times of war or civil emergency ,can be buried and retrieved later.I live in Central Java and sometimes here gold antiquities are unearthed so it's been used as a transportable form of wealth for thousands of years
