Australia is unique, worldwide, in that broadband featured very strongly on the election agendas in two elections - 2007 and 2010 - and it could be argued that it played a decisive role in the outcome in both these elections.

It is therefore astounding that the opposition - contrary to the clear will of the voters - wants to tear the NBN apart. It appears that it just does not get the message that the Australian people want the NBN.

It is also incomprehensible that leading 'digital people' within the coalition, like Malcolm Turnbull and Paul Fletcher, wish to kill the NBN at all costs, and for that purpose Malcolm Turnbull has been appointed as the bulldog who has to tear the NBN apart.

This happened in the same week that the UN Assembly in New York received the report that promotes broadband as essential infrastructure for the digital economy. The national broadband developments in Australia, linked to the trans-sector use of broadband infrastructure for other sectors such as healthcare, education, economic and social development, have been instrumental in the formation of the ITU/UNESCO Broadband Commission for Digital Development, and the NBN as a concept has supplied guidance for its discussions and reports. Australia was congratulated for this at the meeting in New York
