I have been watching that Altech for a while now. Their batteries are filled with nickel and last around 15 years. They are looking to build a factory in Germany. Not too far from where I live. These are batteries for house hold power storage. Their lifecycle is twice that of Lithium and operate down to minus mmmmm was it minus 60. I can;t remember and operate in very hot conditions aswell.
I have Lifepo4 batteries in my car and they won't charge at 0 degrees or under. Seeing that we we were well under 0 for the last 2 months the Altech household batteries look pretty good. And they are filled with nickel. They have to get the nickel from somewhere.

I can't see the nickel price dipping down too much further. Maybe the likes of BHP are just using the situation to manipulate it to their advantage.

Model 3's heat the battery prior to arriving at a charging station.

BHP'S cost have also soared. If BHP shut Kambalda and and Mt Keith then you can kiss the Kalgoorlie Ni smelter good bye and therefore also the Kwinana refinery. So I also find it highly unlikely they'll shut down Ni West.
It's possible that you're correct that it's all hype to get Government support and lower royalties.
