You're missing the point. The source of electricity may not be 100% clean today, but because it's electric the source can be changed at any time.
If i buy a Tesla today and it uses 100% powered via coal (which is still cleaner than burning petrol and certainly diesel) and then over time it starts using more renewables including wind, solar and nuclear (one day). Then we're still better off.
Many commentaters here can't see the forest for the trees.
