Obviously if you think buying an EV is doing the right thing for the environment, you've been conned.

Unfortunately this is correct. EVs make the climate crisis worse, they just do it at a slightly slower rate than ICE cars. But you could say that about most industrial activity. Aside from that, as a rapidly developing product, I think most people realise that early adopters generally accept the current deficiencies, and in a very short time these will largely be addressed.

But yeah, if an ICE advocate says "oh but EVs aren't green" they've shot themselves in the foot because ICE cars are much worse!

I would like to see "right to repair" requirement for battery replacement, requiring third party options that sort of consumer protection. I feel like a company like BYD should be able to resist planned obsolescence because they are vertically integrated, i.e. they make their own batteries and will still profit from their cars as they age. I've heard some anecdotes about Leaf owners being screwed by Nissan dealers who are part of the old ICE ecosystem and would rather steer them to buying a new car rather than fulfill their obligation to replace a battery, even at a stupid high price. That can't continue.
