Because your dollar would be worthless if you thought like this to the actual detriment of the entire country as you would have to import everything if you had no industrial base vs making a couple of gas producers and shareholders rich so that's how government provide such balance. If no governing bodies were in place and market ran free then one company or one bank in Australia would also own everything
