If you consider how TVs have changed over the last 10 years and then try to project how TVs could change in the next 10 years.

3D TV could be the norm and instead of large screen TVs, we could see the beginning of the TV wall.

(The California Institute of Telecommunication and Information Technology (CalIT2) in San Diego already has a 100 Million pixel display wall and projectors that runs at FOUR TIMES the 1080p resolution.)

Even without TV technology progressing, with what is available now but limited because of Broadband speed is Internet TV.

Instead of watching free to air TV, we will be watching Internet TV.
Including free channels, pay TV, Special interest channels, Education channels, and we will be able to purchase and watch sports from around the world via the Internet TV.

This will be watched on a HDTV, with almost unlimited channels to choose from.

The Internet will become integrated into our homes, and the way most people see our current Computer, TV and Phone set up will be different.

The computer will not be a box next to the desk, it will be in a cupboard or built into the home. You will be able to access the computer with a remote keyboard/mouse or touch screen from any of the screens (TV, Photo Frame, monitor, etc.) throughout the home.

Our current Telephone system will be obsolete and VOIP will become the norm with video and who knows what other features.
The new phone system will be able to be accessed from any screen throughout the home, including the HDTV.

As you know VOIP at present is normally okay but the quality is not always good or reliable.
If VOIP is to replace the existing phone system our Broadband has to be improved throughout Australia.

The VOIP bandwidth I used was based on High Definition 720P as a minimum requirement for viewing on a TV.

Our next generation Phone system will allow us to be sitting in our lounge chair watching TV, when the phone rings, we will press the remote to pause what we are watching and to answer the phone on our TV, (the same as we would on our computer with VOIP now).

The phone will be integrated into the home and will be able to be answered from any location throughout the home.

Remote business and personal computer management and services are off site computer management and storage.

The operating system and applications will not need to be installed on our home computer in the current way that we do now.

Instead of having to become a mini expert every time the computer has a problem or having to take the computer to someone else to resolve an issue, we will be able to subscribe to companies that will be able to maintain our home computers remotely via the Internet.

We will also be able to subscribe to companies that offer suites of programs that we will be able to tailor to our needs.
Our files will be backed up off location, computer maintenance will be done for us remotely, etc.

The downloading of updates, restoring a crashed computer, recovering files from back up , restoring our personal settings, etc. will be done remotely by the company of our choosing.

I long for the day when I don't need to know much about my computer and someone else can look after all of the frustrating and time consuming issues that come with having a computer.

All of the above can be done now, but due to the current limitations of our Broadband not all is practical.

The above is only a small sample of how the NBN will be used, and in 10 years the NBN will probably still need to rely on speed improvements for Fibre Optic to keep pace with the increase in information being sent over the Internet.
"1 Terabit (Future achievable Broadband NBN speeds - 69.1 Terabit speed reached in Japanese NTT test)"

The NBN will be the start of some major changes to our communication network and how we keep in contact with others.

New industries and services will be developed and if Australia can get in on the ground floor, Australia could be up there with the world leaders in those industries and services, (creating export opportunities for Australian business).

The NBN is an 8 to 10 year project, so we cannot wait 8 to 10 years to start the NBN or Australia will miss a fantastic opportunity to develop many new businesses for Australia's future.

As you say fibre to node may be sufficient for now, (I don't know for how long though).

I know that the NBN looked at other possibilities before deciding on their current plan.

The shorter plan approach with the add on upgrade down the track could be a better way to go, (again I am not sure).

I do believe that the NBN is a bigger step into Australia's future than most people think.

The NBN funding is not all from the Australian Tax payer, some of the funding is from "infrastructure bonds".
I do not know what other funding arrangements have been made and I am not sure if the revenue over the 8 to 10 year project is funding some of the costs.
When the government sells their share of the NBN down the track, the funding used from the "infrastructure bonds" can be paid back.

Most of the Bandwidth on the Internet is pictures, sound and applications, we don't need much bandwidth for text.

Consider what we do on the Internet today and then consider what we use to do on the Internet and the old Bulletin Boards. The change is dramatic and would not of happened if the Internet speed had not increased.
Now try to imagine what we will be doing on the Internet in 8 to 10 years time when some of us will be just getting connected to the NBN.

    How we:-
    shop,
    communicate with others,
    seek medical assistance,
    watch live TV,
    study,
    are educated,
    do business,
    work from home,
    maintain our computer,
    are entertained,
    etc.,
    etc.,
Will change dramatically from what we do today.

Combine a Media Centre Computer, an advanced Telephone system, almost unlimited HDTV channels, security system, media hub, home automation system, home business office, medical assistance hotline, complete learning centre, advice hot line, etc. all to be viable because of a faster Broadband Network.

It would require writing a book to cover all of the new things that will be possible and all the things that will be improved with a faster Broadband Network.

I hope this has been of value.

    Cheers,
    Glug
