You'd assume he's already driven up the Gillies Range to come to that conclusion.
It's an interesting question if say you had a vehicle with a range of 400km & you wanted to do a round trip of 350 km but the initial outwardbound segment was steeply up hill would you have enough power to get back to the downward section on your return trip to self recharge & get home?
