The real question is what was the USA doing in that region since 1940s. Why did Eisenhower offered to create an anti communist country in the south to counter the communist north after the country was divided in 1950 after the Geneva Accords kicked in. Why did Kennedy and Johnson created a foreign policy which was based on sparing no cost or effort to counter the spread of communism throughout Asia?
You can say that the USA meddling in the region, created the crisis, which turned into a horrible war. The USA started meddling in Ukraine way before 2014 and 2022.
The USA military involvement in Vietnam had nothing to do with saving people.
