Norwegian player gets set to join race for Namibia oil riches
"BW Energy is brimming with enthusiasm about the exploration potential surrounding its 1.3 trillion cubic foot Kudu gas discovery offshore Namibia and is already preparing a drilling campaign and plans for a data room later this year to attract new partners.
The Norwegian operator has been working on the commercially challenging Kudu gas-to-power project for years, but the big discoveries made in the Orange basin over the past two years by Shell, TotalEnergies and Galp Energia triggered a rethink about the oil potential of its acreage around the shallow-water field.
As a result, last year, BW Energy acquired some 4600 square kilometres of 3D seismic data across all of Production Licence 3 — also dubbed Greater Kudu — and likes what it sees. Chief operating officer Lin Garner Espey told analysts on Wednesday that while the 3D data is still being processed, “the early products are in and we’re quite excited”. He said the company is also “excited” about Galp’s recent Cretaceous-age Mopane discovery in the acreage immediately west of Kudu, a find that is “beneficial for prospects on our block”.
Speaking during BW Energy’s fourth-quarter results call, Espey said that such is the optimism generated by the initial data, the company has decided to order long-lead items for an exploration drilling campaign."
