"...Ukraine asserting their independance from russia is what this war is about..." No it isn't.
It's about US/EU wanting to take Ukraine out of Russia's sphere of influence and bring it into theirs. Jan Stoltenberg: Russia invaded Ukraine over fears of NATO expansion. NYT: CIA established multiple bases along Russia-Ukraine border as far back as a decade ago. US supported/backed an illegal coup in Ukraine, which resulted in the overthrow of a more or less neutral government and the installation of a government that pursued aggressive anti-Russian policies. US/UK sabotaged any peace making/negotiations efforts that would have avoided the war.
Ukraine is less "independent" now then it was before 2014. Hundreds of thousands dead. Millions have fled. Economy is totally dependent on US/EU handouts, which Ukraine will have to pay back with interest. It will be totally dependent on US/EU to rebuild whatever remains of Ukraine after the war, meaning that Ukraine will become even more indebted to Western institutions and corporations, which means an even further loss of independence.
