Here is an article showing a middle of the road broadband approach for a less population concentrated part of the UK. Still plenty of capacity for tomorrows services, but ready to upgrade for next week. FTTN will give them minimum 40Mbps which covers your 4 HDTV channels! It also specifies all equipment and installation must be compatible to upgrade to FTTP as required.

    BT's lesson for Conroy's NBN

    http://www.businessspectator.com.au/bs.nsf/Article/BTs-lesson-for-Conroys-NBN-pd20101006-9XRNF?OpenDocument&src=ea

"The Cornwall roll-out, at the old rate, will cost $293 million, or $550 per capita ($400 at today's rates). The NBN, on current estimates, will cost $2000 per capita. "

"The Cornish program is much slower while half the customers will get 'fibre to the premises' (FTTP), up to 40 per cent of customers will make do with 'fibre to the cabinet' (FTTC). The latter, sometimes known as 'fibre to the curb' is much cheaper to install, but generally delivers only 40 Mbps download speed and 10 Mbps upload speed, due to the fact that the last couple of hundred metres involve a copper loop rather than fibre optics.
