The Australian Government-appointed consultation committee on the new mineral resources rent tax must decide on the difficult question of which rate to apply to certain coal technologies. Companies that are active in coal-to-liquid processes, underground coal gasification or coalbed methane may be subject to the new tax at a rate of 22.5% or an extension of the existing petroleum resources rent tax, which is higher at 40%. Linc Energy, Cougar Energy and Carbon Energy could all feel the impact.
