Let me put it this way. The growth of roof-top solar has been so dramatic over the last 5 years that the grid operators are being left with no choice but to make provision for battery storage. Simply put, the grids are being overloaded with power from roof-top solar; the excess so much so that feed-back tariffs are being removed from householders and new inverters are designed so the grids can actually turn your solar off to cope with said excess . In any case, if the grids can't store the excess, then they are losing money and wasting a cheap valuable renewable resource, so it makes economic and mechanical/technical sense for grid operators to retrofit batteries. Indeed, there are many US grid operators already doing this for the same reasons. While here in Oz there is also much talk about community battery instillations where the community runs and prospers from the loop effect.
So, to answer your question in a general sense, yes, big things already happening with grid and community storage, and a much-forgotten aspect of the battery market and lithium demand.
