The reduction of USSR into what Russia is now can hardly be considered empire expansion.
As for Europe's energy needs - if Europe does not have enough energy than Europe should not be blowing up their own coal fired energy providers and then blame Russia.
If I recall correctly Hungary's Mr Orban whilst bagged by other nations, has good economic relations with Russia as Mr Orban considers the well being of Hungary's residents. This, despite the enormous backlash he faces - perhaps others should follow Mr Orban's example with such considerations. AIMO
