Hi pete, the smoke coming out of the stack is exactly how it should be in that situation. When a ship looses steering in a situation like that, they follow a procededure called a 'Crash Stop'. It happens in three stages, if the fuel supply is cut off or lost to the main engine, the propellor continues to turn because the ship is making headway. That's why high pressure compressed air is used to start, and stop the engines and (prop shaft). Once stopped it would have been put in full astern at full revs due to the urgency of the situation.
It happens more often than you would thing in less precarious situations.
