"There is no reason to believe that large parts of any population wish to reject learning or those who are learned.
People want the best for society and themselves.
The extent to which a populace falls back on superstition or violence can be traced to the ignorance in which their elites have managed to keep them, the ill treatment they have suffered and the despair to which a combination of ignorance and suffering have driven them..."

Yep - a great philosopher, whom I respect. John Ralston Saul - he has summed up the Labor Party and Julia Gillard and co. summed up very well.
Especially the "ignorance in which their 'elites' have managed to keep them" bit!
Sounds like Julia and her dirty sleazy deal with the Greens. And all her other sneaky shonky deals and backroom plots behind our backs. Carbon Tax being one of many. NOT ONE scream of protest on here from any of her cheer squad! Yet they go on ad nauseum about Abbott and his every utterance, and facial expression like a lot of schoolyard bullies. Damned if he does - and damned if he doesn't!
WE, the voting public, all went to the polls VERY ruddy ignorant!
Like lambs to the slaughter. Facing policies we had NOy idea existed! How dastardly is that - to cancel one set of policies and bring in replacements immediately AFTER the election. Gillard is very skilled with knives and axes and hollow "promises".
Caligula and what he did to almost destroy the Roman Empire and their "society" is starting to come to mind! He did and said what he liked - because he could!
This woman is incorrigible.
