He's framing the current situation in terms of personal recollections of his parents who went through a completely different experience with its unique dynamic between groups. The Germans, non-Jews and Jews lived harmoniously within the same country and communities and didn't normally terrorise each other. It was only until the 1930s wtih the prominence of the Nazis who sought scapegoats and easy targets (especially based on Hitler's racist ideology) for their economic problems.
Entirely different situation in the Middle East with the Islamists and their holy invocation of Jihadism who have never and will never want a peaceful coexistence with non-Muslim entities, let alone those who mark their own territories.
