The statistic that's always quoted of 1 woman per week in Australia being murdered by a current or former partner is quite unremarkable when placed in context. If there are 10 million adult women in Australia of whom 50 are murdered by a male each year, that's 1 in 200 000. The flip side of that is that 199 999 in 200 000 males did not murder a female partner last year and 199 999 in 200 000 women were not murdered by their male partner. Domestic violence is horrific for those enduring it, but it's difficult to conclude from the stats that non perpetrating males bear some kind of collective responsibility for actions with which they have no association. The responsibility we do have is to create structures for women that are in the horrific situation of living with a violent partner that allow her to leave, and that effectively deal with the male if his response is to start stalking her.
