Russia can continue indefinitely if they're willing to sacrifice their future population and economy (which the president may be willing to, and the people can hardly stop).
But they're burning through their USSR equipment reserves very quickly. That is finite. Every day, the reserve gets closer to the dregs. Even the expensive/important bits like AWACS and ships are running out. If they continue without proper equipment, the manpower losses get even worse (sitting in fox hole until your time runs out, to a $1000 drone, with no evac coming).
It's not a guaranteed outcome, but Trump apparently being compromised sure doesn't help, leaving it up to Europe and the rest of the free world.
