People back in the sixties used to call them Jap crap but I think that was more about bias than reality.
My father had a Toyota Crown when I first learned how to drive. Later on I bought it off him and got many more kilometres out of it with no major mechanical issues.
As I recall, they called the Crown a poor man’s Mercedes.
For years after that I bought nothing but Toyotas, including a Celica in 1973.
So for as long as I can remember, Toyotas have always been quality cars.
