Politicians only care about one thing, that's getting relected. How does approving this deal get them relected? Not clear to me. Blocking it probably wins a few friends though. ALP could care less about Gina.
P.S for the record, language evolves it's not static. Both forms are acceptable uses, and in fact the phrase "could care less" is usually meant in a more insulting way, indicating an element of sarcasm. Appeared to have the desired effect on you anyway.
