In respect to a multi user port with capacity to direct load cape size vessels, that is exactly what South Australia needs and if one gets up, then that would benefit many South Australian junior resource companies.
In respect to where that port should be, why not have it built on the land at Myponie Point that Hawsons has the option over - see announcement yesterdays where it says they have extended the option for that land to June 2025. Hawsons have an MoU with Flinders Ports with respect to that land - see announcements from 16 and 20 June 2022 for more details. They appear to have a good working relationship with Flinders Ports given the current plan to ship out of Port Adelaide.
In respect to the post by @thecrabpest about a HIO and MGT merger - whilst there could be some synergies in a merger, I actually think it works against getting a multi user deep water port in the Spencer Gulf. If Flinders Ports had agreements from Hawsons and others (say MGT but could be anyone) to export bulk commodities from Myponie Point, then Flinders Ports (or anyone else for that matter) are more likely to build a deep water port. Access to a deep water port to direct load cape size vessels will assist the project fundamentals of many projects and a port that helps multiple projects go ahead could also be more likely to get government funding.
But until such time as someone commits to building a new deep water port, gets approvals and gets it built, I am more than happy that Hawsons has a plan to use existing rail and an existing port to get their product to market.
