I am actually prone to spreading my investments too thin (I own something like 50 different companies), but most of my holding is in 10 companies. I try to not exceed 10% of my capital in any one company.
It is a very good idea to start slowly with investing. I only started investing in listed companies in 2016 and for the first 4 years I only invested small amounts while I figured out how the market works and found a few niches where I seemed to have an edge. Made quite a number of dumb mistakes, but the losses were minor as my investments were small.
