Not sure what British schools do has to do with it?

Private schools aren't a business, they are not for profit organisations.

What utter nonsense. Private schools receive less funding than public schools.
If you closed down private schools, students would have to move to public schools bringing with them less funding than the students already there.
Not to mention the cost of building more public schools.
Even if you simply cut all funding to private schools there would be a massive influx from Private to Public schools with the same result.
