The paper I posted earlier addresses the idea of unsaturation of CO2 molecules in the upper atmosphere (This is the angle of the you tube piece you posted, Dave). Here it is again:

It's not my paper; it's written by researchers at the Institute of Optoelectronics in Poland.
The argument against the idea that the upper atmospheric layers are responsible for the warming of the surface temperature is that each layer exhibits massive temperature changes. The top of the troposphere is ~-55 deg C. The Stratosphere ranges between the temp of the interface between trop and strat (~ -55deg C) and 0 deg C at the top of the strat. Then the mesosphere ranges between 0 deg C and ~ -90 deg C. Then the thermosphere ranges between ~ -90 deg C up towards boiling point.
At what point does the interaction of the couple hundred molecules of CO2 cause warming at the surface, considering that these layers are discrete and that the temperature range between them is huge?
