The Mayor of Casterbridge - by Thomas Hardy. I've read it about four times and cry every time.

The Remains of the Day - Kazio Ishaguro - a book written where the entire story is what is inbetween the lines.....

Walking on Glass - Ian Banks - what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object.

and of course The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes - Australian History

Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond - very interesting in light of China's recent economic rise.
