The technology is not precise enough, and the infinite variables on the road are too great. It's very different from a plane going from point to point in open skies. To be honest, self flying personal VTOLs would make more sense than cars. How often do you order an uber and it shows your pick up spot 100m from where you are actually standing.
If that level of accuracy was considered good enough for self driving cars, the roads would be chaos.
Why people are so excited to give control of all aspects of their lives to machines, AI and autonomy absolutely beggars belief. They'd rather give their mrs a battery operated, wifi connected, 6 inch friend instead of facing the inconvenience of doing that filthy job themselves.
Living a real life is the best. Doing things yourself is the best. If you want to give that up, what's the point. If leaving the house and driving somewhere is too much for you, stay at home.
