"I cannot give you more than that to say that the body is made of matter, and this is separate from the soul/spirit"
Now your adding spirit into the picture which is not the soul as I'm seeing it and the verse you quoted, it is clear that it is the spirit that goes back to God, not the soul.
Man BECAME a living soul = very, very clear that the whole package, the body that come alive is deemed as a living soul.
As for the translations of the meaning of soul, I gave two separate outlines of definitions from the Interlinear and if memory serves me correct, on the whole, they didn't support your view.
There seems to be two aspects to the soul, of which I don't seem to be getting through.
Literal as in the whole bodily package, from which a soul aspect, spiritual aspect you might say, develops and that is known as The You, so to speak, which you want to fear being killed, taken from you in the likes of, emotional abuse etc, etc.
Can you show a verse in the Bible that says or shows, that after death your soul goes to God, as in you suggest, to him but the closeness depends how close you were while here etc.
You also say Gen is not clear, despite it being very clear, but you also seem to be ignoring, many physical OT things are foreshadows of the now spiritual times after Jesus.
Hence a material aspect and spiritual aspect to the meaning of soul???
