The coral islands are surrounded by living coral reef. The reef grows faster after storms. The storm created rubble helps to grow the reef upwards which is why over time we get coral atolls developed. When the rubble is high enough the coral rubble gets pushed onto the shoreline making the island grow as well. This is why coral atolls can survive rising sea levels when such occur.
